Mark Twain quote: 'Words of wisdom: 'Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.' In Mark Twain's day, bicycles, which were made of wood and had metal tires, were called boneshakers because of the extreme discomfort riders felt peddling over cobblestone streets. In 1870, the bone shaker was replaced by the 'high wheel bicycle,' a dubious advance in technology that was so unstable that a sudden stop, bump, stone - or just about anything else - sent the rider flying head first over the handle bars.'
