On the weekend of October 6, 7, and 8, 17 rugged Huggers spent the weekend hiking in the
foothills of the Adirondacks in Turin, NY. Most of group arrived at the Pioneer Lodge by
mid-afternoon on Friday, October 6. The Pioneer Lodge is a bed and breakfast home on a
working dairy farm. It is a charming, early American home, built in the mid 1800s.
On Friday evening, a group of 13 went to the "Hideaway" on Fish Creek Road in West Leyden
for dinner, then back to the lodge and a "flashlight" walk through the local cemetery.
After a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning, we went on a hike (in the rain) at the
Whetstone Gulf State Park, where we hiked 5 miles around the rim of a deep, scenic gorge.
Of course, after the hike, the rain stopped. Saturday afternoon, most of the group went
to Boonville for crafts and antique hunting.
On Saturday evening, we went back to the lodge for a fabulous "Thanksgiving" turkey dinner
with all the trimmings. After dinner, there were more walks and trips to the barn, followed
by leisure time, including TV, games, cards, readings, etc.
Sunday morning, there were more trips to the barn and a great farmer's breakfast was
followed by more hiking. Some went to Tug Hill (Barnes Corners) for a 4-mile hike.
Others went to Pixley Falls State Park. All of the brave hikers enjoyed the cold,
snow-flurry, wet weekend with a smile and a hug as we sat around a log fire at the
lodge talking about our adventurous weekend.
