Pacesetters... 2003 Snowshoe Stomp . . . . . Return to "Snowshoeing"

Harriet Hollister State Park,
Honeoye, N.Y. - December 14, 2003

There were two concerns regarding this trip. First, would the stormy, blizzard-like weather on December 14th. discourage people from driving down to Harriet Hollister Park, and secondly, would the boiling water for our hot chocolate stay hot in the Huggers 10-gallon thermos for the duration of the day?

The Huggers are a hardy, determined group. Ten of the eighteen people signed up made the trip in spite of the weather. Upon arrival at Harriet Hollister, we found less snow than at home, the opposite of what we expected. But there was enough to snowshoe, and it was still coming down, so we strapped on our equipment and headed out.

We started by hiking the wooded Big Oak Trail to the overlook, where the usually spectacular view of Honeoye Lake was obscured by the falling snow. Then it was on to the lean-to shelter where we took a lunch break. We were starting to feel the cold and needed to get moving so we then headed out to the flat, scenic Raccoon Run Trail. The snow continued to fall and we still had some energy left so we took another trip through the tall trees of the Little Whiteface Trail before heading back to the cars.

After about three hours of snowshoeing we returned to the parking lot and found the water was still piping hot after almost 5½ hours in the back of our station wagon. The outside temperature was about 22-24 degrees. That thermos worked great! We all relaxed and enjoyed a hot cup of chocolate along with homemade cookies and brownies made by Pauline and Alice. Thank you ladies!

Special thanks are also in order to all the adventuresome Pacesetters who braved the elements to participate in this fun event. The snow was still falling as we headed for home, a bit tired, but relaxed and feeling great from our day in the Park.
