Pacesetters... 2001 Snowshoe Cookout . . . . . Return to "Snowshoeing"

View of Bristol Valley from Camp Cutler.

Camp Cutler, Naples, N.Y. - January 14, 2001

The Bristol Hills were shrouded in fog as we approached the Naples area for our first-ever snowshoe cookout adventure. Our outfitters, Pack,Paddle,Ski,Corp. of Lima, N.Y. arrived early at the cabin in Camp Cutler to greet the 22 participants. As the fog lifted, we got our gear on and were given basic instruction along with a warm-up exercise by doing the Hokey-Pokey on snowshoes. You must try this to appreciate it. You must see it to believe it.

We divided into two groups, those looking for a challenge, and those wanting something less strenuous. The sun struggled to break through the clouds as we headed off into the hills on the Finger Lakes trail. One group took a steep uphill trail to a summit where they were rewarded with a spectacular view of the Bristol Valley. The others remained in the heavily wooded lower areas, where they blazed their own trails through the deep snow in the wilderness.

After about two hours, all returned to the cabin where a hot, home cooked meal awaited us. PPS served us thick, hearty rice soup containing beef and vegetables, along with fresh wheat bread, juice, and cookies. Many huddled around the stove to warm up a bit. PPS also brought their good, heavy-duty plasticware - no paper plates or cups for these environmentally conscience folks. Fortunately for us they didn't ask us to wash them! When all were finished, a few headed for home while the rest summoned up enough energy for another 45 minutes or so for a hike in the wild. Then all packed up and left, a bit tired, but quite happy. Thanks to PPS and all the participants for their support of this most enjoyable adventure.
