Keuka Lake Weekend 2003 . . . . . . . Return to "Biking Events"

Gone With The Wind B&B

KEUKA LAKE BIKE WEEKEND, August 30-September1

Joyce put together a fabulous weekend getaway, with 25 guests staying at either the Gone With The Wind or 10,000 Delights bed and breakfast inns just two miles apart.

Saturday morning we joined the daytrippers to bike 46 miles around the lake. A first - we had 38 people ride around Keuka and everyone made it, with many first-timers. Steve and Kathy got to test their new tandem on the hills and did well considering they’ve only been married one year. To celebrate their First Anniversary, they brought the delicious, carrot cake top layer from their wedding plus champagne to celebrate with the group.

Sunday some biked the "Y" of the lake, while others kayaked the lake, toured the area towns, attended the weekend Indian festival, and sampled wine at local wineries including Heron Hill and Bully Hill. Some were lucky enough to catch a free class held only once each year on the dried flower business from a local, private farm that grows and dries dozens of wild flower varieties in multiple colors for public sale. Each day we enjoyed our happy hours on the porch together before heading into Hammondsport for dinner. Thanks to our videographers who provided the great home movie shows: Don G., Steve R. and Bob D., and to Peggy and Mike for providing ride maps and our trusty cooler.

On Monday some people hiked Keuka State Park, stopping in Branchport for lunch on the way home, while others shopped at the Windmill in Penn Yan before heading home. Noteworthy was the hiking trail behind 10,000 Delights with a glass-bottomed Japanese teahouse built over a 60’ waterfall, a brick labyrinth, a treehouse with stained glass windows, and a lifesize horse sculpture. You’ll have to ask the guests at this B&B if they saw or heard any of the ghosts known to remove pictures from walls, unlock doors or request raisins in their scones!
