Haunted Cabin Camping - 2003 ..... Return to "Camping Trips", or "Halloween"

ALLEGHASTLY WEEKEND - October 24-26, 2003

Bruce & Kari provided a very entertaining fall weekend for 28 of us at Allegany State Park. Friday evening began with dinner at the Red Garter restaurant and a great hilltop view of the fall foliage and a general "HI" and hugs as we greeted each other, some of whom we simply haven’t seen in ages!

Saturday morning most of us toured the park on a five-mile hike while others attended the Park Ranger’s fossil hunt and creek walk along with a bat lecture. After a hearty lunch with tasty chili & soups, people split up to enjoy a sunny, warm, afternoon in the mid-60’s. Some pulled out their mountain bikes to practice jumping rocks and logs. Steve P. is lucky we recognized him with all the mud on his face. Some hiked to see the famous bear caves and Thunder Rocks or toured the pond where a cloud of ladybugs swarmed the hikers to hitch a ride. Some shopped the outlet stores and others canoed. By late afternoon, we were back at the camp enjoying a happy hour followed by dinner before the Halloween party.

What a party! Kari and Denny had the camp decorated to the hilt with carved pumpkins, smoking cauldrons, and a cemetery full of oddities. One ghoul found the "Bruce Doll" and it was love at first bite! You should try eating dinner with a face in a jar staring back at you! We also had a mystery witch who kept showing up in different bunks. Richard T. and Alice carved their first "pattern" pumpkin and did a great job. Dave K. added his free form pumpkin to the display. And what a display it was!

The costumes were exceptional. Awards were given for the Funniest for the 60’s hippie (aka Richard T.), Most Original for "the Bunny" (aka Barb W.) and the Best Overall for the ghoulish wedding couple (aka Bruce & Mary). Ask Richard how he likes wearing long hair. We had witches, a pirate, vampires, wizards, a shiek, a monster, several faceless ghouls, a horny goblin, Count Kolchukla, a ghost, Cruella, and many other cleverly dressed spooks to amuse us. Kari, in making sure she brought all the "effects", forgot her costume, however Trudy came to the rescue with a second costume she brought. Thanks Trudy for the rescue! Great costumes everyone! We had a hard time telling who was who.

It was a good thing we crammed our outdoor activities into Saturday because part way through our Sunday morning hike it began to rain. After another great lunch of chili & soups we packed up and headed home. Thanks to everyone who brought and prepared food. It was fabulous. Richard & Joyce’s seafood chowder was gone as soon as they brought it out. Trudy made a great cabbage soup. Gary D. and John & Carol made great chili. Gary C. made a wonderful lentil soup. The breakfast detail did a fabulous job both days as did the Saturday supper crew. We have some really great cooks in this Club.

Be on the lookout for next year’s Halloween Party event. From the sounds of the planning, it should be a great time and you won’t want to miss it.
