Genesee Country Village’s Annual Winter Day, February 12, 2006
The unusually mild winter kept the crowds down this year, but those that joined us had an absolutely beautiful day that was not too cold and mostly sunny. There were ten of us all together, taking turns manning the Hugger’s display table, with frequent breaks to enjoy the Nature Center’s trails and the Village streets. This year the Hugger Snowshoers had a large display area to ourselves in the Nature Center, as we were the only group represented. Our volunteers brought a variety of equipment including boots, trekking poles, and different types of snowshoes to demonstrate to the public. We also had handouts, brochures, membership forms, and Club newsletters to give away. This event was designed to not only promote the Museum but also give Clubs like ours an opportunity to have the public meet us.
The Nature trails had only a few inches of snow on them, just barely enough to snowshoe with. However most of us preferred to hike since the snow wasn’t that deep. The Village was officially closed, but we were once again allowed to walk through the streets to view the old buildings in a pleasant wintry setting. During "lunch break" some of us headed over to the "Depot" restaurant for a hot sandwich, while others enjoyed food they had brought with them. It was a relaxing time and we all got to enjoy good company and pleasant conversations.
I must thank all our volunteers, many of whom had helped out in previous years, for their time and dedication. They were; Bob Dicker, Steve Maley, Kathy Meeusen, Ginny Miers, Dan and Barb Warren, Steve and Teddi Yuschak, and Connie Miller who joined us later. We should be proud of these people and our Club, which they were representing.
